Calories in red wine

Red wine consumption, in moderation, has numerous health benefits. ranging from reduction of risk of heart disease to a boosted immune system.  But what about the calories in red wine?

Red wine is relatively low in calories and moderate consumption can be appropriate even for someone that is dieting for weight loss.  Because of its low sugar content, numerous diet plans, such as the Atkins diet, identify red wine is the only alcoholic beverage that a dieter can consume.

As a general rule of thumb, a five ounce serving of a dry red wine, such as syrah, or merlot, is approximately 100 calories.  A five ounce serving of a sweet red wine, such as port, is approximately 130 calories.  Because sweet dessert wines contain high levels of sugar, many diet programs do not recommend them even though they are technically red wines.

So enjoy a glass or two of red wine every day, even if you are on a diet.  The calories in red wine will not impede your weight loss goals.  The numerous health benefits of wine,  and the chance to unwind and enjoy how wonderful wine is, far outweigh the calorie count!
